In an inspiring initiative to bridge the gap between education and employment, the SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR EMPLOYMENT STUDENTS (SPES) has once again demonstrated its commitment to the youth of Dalaguete. This year, 20 college students have been selected as beneficiaries, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the workforce, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Municipality of Dalaguete.

The SPES program, is a flagship initiative by DOLE, aims to provide students from low-income families with opportunities to earn income during their summer vacation. This helps them cover school fees and other essential expenses, ensuring they can continue their studies without financial hindrances.

For the year 2024, DOLE has provided 40% of the funding for the program, while the Municipality of Dalaguete has generously contributed the remaining 60%. This partnership underscores the shared responsibility of the government and local authorities in fostering educational and employment opportunities for the youth.

Mayor Ronald Allan G. Cesante, in his speech last Friday, highlighted the importance of this program: “Youth are the nation’s builders, and it is our responsibility to provide access for them to go and finish their studies without any delay. That’s why SPES was created – to fill in the gaps that cause delays in education. This program not only gives students a chance to earn but also equips them with the necessary skills and experiences that will prepare them for future employment.”

The program’s impact goes beyond financial assistance. It instills a sense of responsibility and work ethic in students, teaching them how to manage their hard-earned money effectively. Beneficiaries of SPES often learn to prioritize their spending, focusing on essential needs such as school fees, books, and other educational materials. This financial literacy is crucial in fostering a generation of responsible and well-prepared young adults.

As per the SPES beneficiaries, they can’t wait for the next summer to work here at our municipality because they feel that they are important by helping our offices and know they have contributed in their own little ways. They are grateful for the experience and knowledge gained through this program.

The SPES program for 2024 was concluded with a short commencement activity at the SB Session Hall on Friday, July 26, 2024, where the beneficiaries were given certificates of completion for their 20 days of work. This ceremony marked the successful completion of the program and celebrated the students’ contributions and achievements.

The success of SPES in Dalaguete serves as a model for other municipalities aiming to support their youth. The program not only alleviates the financial burden on students and their families but also empowers them to pursue their academic and career goals with greater confidence.

As the 2024 batch of SPES beneficiaries embarks on their journey, the positive impact of this program continues to ripple through the community, demonstrating that with the right support and opportunities, the youth can indeed become the architects of a brighter future for all.
