DALAGUETE STAR CENTER

Education is one of the major components of the SILAW Program. One municipal undertaking established to complement this education initiative is the Dalaguete Skills Training and Resource (STAR) Center, a locally-funded training institution offering vocational courses, (Defensive Driving, Commercial Cooking, Dressmaking, Building Wiring Installation, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Consumer Electronics Servicing, Automotive Servicing, Basic Computer Literacy, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning) to provide a better job opportunity to out-of-school youths through technical skills enhancement.

In its almost a decade of operations, the TESDA-accredited STAR Center is along the way spearheaded by the following people – Imeldo Bacon (June 2002-March 2005), Bonifacio Villagracia, Jr. (April 2005-July 2005), Philip Flores (August 2005-March 2006), and Patrocinio Gamboa (August 2006-present). It was initially housed at the second floor area of the Old Municipal Legislative Hall way back in 2002, however, to give way to the equally important Museo sa Dalaguete, the office and instruction rooms for both the Dressmaking and Commercial Cooking classes are presently transferred at the second floor of the Dalaguete Commercial Center.  Other classes cum work areas are situated in one of the buildings at the Dalaguete National High School. Despite its limited working space and resources, the program has turned out no less than 2,075 graduates on highly in-demand technical skills. Anticipating the need for the program’s expansion due to its steadily rising enrolment, (the program is now broadened to include all out-of-school constituents of the second congressional district of Cebu), blueprints are now underway for the construction of a more spacious and more conducive two-storey STAR Center on a 2,000 square meter municipal lot at the back of the UV-Dalaguete Campus in Barangay Poblacion.
